Businesses and individuals spent approximately $12.1 billion on online advertising in the first six months of 2010, according to an IAB Internet Advertising Revenue Report.

The increase in online advertising revenue rose by 11.3 percent compared to the first half of 2009 and 13.9 percent from the second quarter of 2009. It’s the highest first-half and second-quarter revenue ever recorded.

Search dominated with the greatest share of online ad dollars, attracting more than $5.7 billion between January and June this year. That’s an 11.6 percent increase over last year. Display Advertising, such as banner ads, digital video, rich media, and sponsorship, walked away with $4.4 billion in the first half of 2010, which was a 16 percent increase over last year.

The digital video showed the greatest growth from January to June 2010 with a 31 percent increase over the first half of 2009.

What’s driving the rise in Internet Revenue?

IAB attributes the surge in online advertising revenue to consumer packaged goods and pharmaceutical companies.
