Foursquare hits 3 million milestone, strikes deal with MTV

More than 3 million users have signed up for the geolocation website Foursquare.

The 3 millionth member is Brian S. from St. Louis, Missouri, but he has yet to check in to any venues via the foursquare badgesocial network.

Foursquare has experienced rapid growth since March when it only had 725,000 members. The start-up hit 2.6 million users on August 2. Many believed Facebook Places would spell the end to Foursquare’s success. On the contrary, by some estimates, Foursquare is adding 15,500 users per day or almost half a million users per month even after the release of Facebook Places.

It appears that Foursquare is positioning itself to accelerate its membership by appealing to the youth of America. Foursquare is partnering with MTV for the Video Music Award. A 2010 MTV VMA Moonman Badge has been created to award users who check-in at a music venue. Scoring the hip badge will earn users an entry into an MTV contest. The reward is a trip to California to attend the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards on Sept. 12.
