As entrepreneurs, marketers, agency owners, and hard-working professionals, most of us give a lot of time and attention to our work.
We give a lot of time and attention to our clients, our prospects, our employees, and subcontractors.
Well today is Mother’s Day, and honestly, I hope you don’t read this till Monday, but if by chance you are reading this on Sunday, I’m going to make this simple request:
Stop what you are doing and give your time and attention to your mom (and/or wife of your children). It’s their day. It’s their day to get all of you. There may be no better gift you can give than to celebrate mothers with your time.
Maybe you can’t be there in person. With COVID-19 there is a high likelihood that many of us will not be able to see our moms, simply to ensure their health.
But I offer you this. Call her. Spend an hour or more on the phone with her.
Give her your time. If you can have a gift sent, then send it.
Let me tell you a story about our CEO (aka my father) and a very memorable Mother’s Day.
When I was about 13 years old, I was in a soccer league and it was the end of the season. We just finished playing our last soccer game on a Saturday, and at the end of the game, our record was tied perfectly with another team.
Who would get the better trophy? The league actually had 1st place, 2nd place, 3rd place trophies; it wasn’t all “participation trophies.”
Who would get the better trophy? The league actually had 1st place, 2nd place, 3rd place trophies; it wasn’t all “participation trophies.”
The solution the league came up with was to play one more game that Sunday to determine the winner.
The only problem was, Sunday was Mother’s Day. The other team was ready and willing.
My father was also the coach of my soccer team. He looked at the situation and discussed it with the team and parents.
Now, we had worked hard as a team. We practiced 2 to 3 times a week. We conditioned constantly. We all took this very seriously all season long and had grown a lot as a team.
To say in what place we finished in didn’t matter to us would be selling short the passion we put into being the best.
Well, my Father, being the kind of leader he is, gave a little speech.
“Team, who brought you to all these practices 2 to 3 times a week? Most of your moms.
Who brought you to the games and spent their Saturday’s here?”
The team answered – “Mom”
He continued, “Who made sure your jerseys were clean and you were prepared each day?”
Team – “Mom”
“Who brought you snacks and water?”
Team – “Mom”
“Tomorrow is Mother’s Day. Now I realize many moms are used to sacrificing. They are willing to give up their day to have us play one final game. However, tomorrow is about your mom. Spend the day with your mom. Make tomorrow about your mom. This is more important than any trophy you could possess.”
The team agreed. We took the loss and we celebrated our moms.
I have never forgotten that. I hope you all take time to celebrate mothers, or the wife of your children–in fact, any women in your life that have “been there” for you.
